20 October 2026
The motion highlights the devastating floods that affected over 10 communities in Ikwo and Ezza South LGAs in September–October 2026, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of over 500 houses, damage to more than 1,000 hectares of farmland, destruction of 15 schools and displacement of over 2,000 families. The motion warns of an impending food security crisis, given Ikwo’s significant contribution to rice production, and raises concerns about the exposure of displaced residents to hunger, unsafe drinking water and waterborne diseases. It calls on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to provide urgent relief materials, temporary shelter, medical supplies, clean water and agricultural support to affected communities. It also seeks the release of ecological intervention funds for river dredging, embankment construction and drainage projects, alongside an environmental impact assessment and a permanent flood control system. Finally, it proposes a minute of silence for those who lost their lives and mandates relevant House committees to visit the affected communities, assess the situation and report back within two weeks to ensure implementation of the resolutions.
